Today, during my favorite part of SUP Yoga, Savasana, I had the most amazing experience. As I lay on my back, fingertips dangling in the water, I was heavily focused on being mindful, present, and aware… using my breath to take in my surroundings, exhaling all the waste and chaos. I lay still, keenly aware of the sound of the water as it lapped against my board, feeling the sun against the top of by body and the redness it caused behind my eyelids. I just allowed all my thoughts to be there, and to have their place within me. Pushing nothing out. Suppressing nothing. I was there and whole.
As the thoughts and sensations flowed, I felt something on my left hand. It startled me and I flinched. I didn’t even get to see what it was. It was gone as fast as it came. As I tried to settle back in, it returned. This time, determined to discover the identity of my visitor, I just turned my head. Staring back at me, eye to eye, was a stunning dragonfly. He didn’t leave my hand. There we both sat, still, just staring and sharing our space, both giving the other permission to just BE.
I have always loved the symbolism of the dragonfly. As I have gone through my constant journey of growth and self-awareness, I feel connected to it’s meaning of change and change in the perspective of self realization. Giving ourselves permission to change, not being held and conformed to this box that others impose is very liberating. It is the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity. Learning to love who we are, find our drive and passion, and ultimately the understanding of the deeper meaning to our own lives.
Change is one of those words that evokes an instantaneous emotion. To some, it brings a pit in the stomach, an immediate tension in your neck… To others, the crazies like myself, it is positive and empowering! Allowing change to have its place in our lives and to give it space to form us and push us in the direction we should go is very liberating. Suddenly, all the stress and anxiety we held surrounding that change being willed into our lives becomes strength and joy.
Breath. Embrace the dragonflies. #LoveOut
